There are few questions I am asked more regularly than, where can I find financial support for artists?, who offers creative grants? or which organizations provide funding for women entrepreneurs?
The idea of a supportive institution handing out what can seem like 'free money' to help launch our projects is the stuff of our sweetest fantasies. And as mythic as they seem, these opportunities do indeed exist! But where?
Of course, there's no free lunch — and the work that goes into applying for these opportunities can be substantial, with much more to come once you've won. But the boost to your cultural capital from even a small award can be enough to spark wide-ranging intrigue and interest — the value of which can far outweigh the cash.
To help make those fantasies come true, I thought I would scour the internet in search of as many grants, venture pitches, financial awards, and other opportunities to support the creative, enterprising go-getters of the Insight community. So clear your weekend folks — there's a lot to apply for here!

Authors League Fund: Emergency Grant

Since 1917, the Authors League Fund has been helping professional writers and dramatists who find themselves in financial need because of medical or health-related problems, temporary loss of income, or other misfortune.
Most of those we help suffer severe health problems but have inadequate insurance; some face eviction; many are older writers whose income has ceased through no fault of their own.
The Fund exists to help professional writers continue their careers, even their lives, with dignity by providing open-ended, interest-free, no-strings-attached loans to pay for pressing expenses.
Our loans are no-strings-attached, interest-free, and are not considered earned income (unlike most professional writing grants). As a result, they are not taxable, do not have to be reported to the IRS, and will not affect your ability to receive assistance from local or federal programs, including Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid.
Repayment can be made when and as one is able. We gratefully accept partial repayment, installments, or donations of any amount from recipients. Your support will go directly to helping other writers in times of need. Please also encourage your friends and colleagues to donate.

Center for Cultural Innovation: Creative Industries Incentive Fund

The City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs’ Creative Industries Incentive Fund (CIIF) provides project support to arts-based commercial businesses involved in the production or distribution of the arts. Incentive awards are for creative industries of all types, such as manufacturers, service providers, presenters, and designers, among others. The CIIF seeks to support projects aimed at building successful small arts businesses in San Jose by their ability to: Increase community support and marketability; Leverage CIIF funding with other funding support; and Demonstrate growth and economic sustainability.
In 2017, CIIF expanded to include a new funding category targeted specifically at arts businesses in San Jose serving as cultural anchors and catalysts in their neighborhoods. This place-based expansion is in response to a growing number of applications to CIIF from neighborhood-based arts businesses as well as nomadic enterprises seeking physical space to anchor themselves in a specific neighborhood. The requests have ranged from storefront improvements to neighborhood activation. The new category, Category 2: CIIF Place-Based, is in addition to the original CIIF category of business support that was offered in CIIF Rounds 1 through 5.
Investing in the economic sustainability of neighborhood arts businesses helps keep creativity alive in San Jose neighborhoods and maintains the unique qualities of place in a city challenged by increasing rents and the homogenizing effects of gentrification.

The Quick Grant program was launched in 2009 by a consortium of California arts funders to strengthen the work of artists and arts administrators by improving access to information and professional development resources. The Quick Grant program awards reimbursement funds to San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit organizations and individual artists in the State of California to enroll in workshops, attend conferences, and to work with consultants and coaches to build administrative and business skills and strengthen the economic sustainability of an organization or arts practice.

Center for Cultural Innovation: SCI Artist-Innovator Fund

The spinal cord injury (SCI) community is abundant with out-of-the-box thinkers, hackers, problem solvers, and individuals creatively tackling challenges. CCI with support from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation launches the first ever SCI Artist-Innovator Fund offering artists, innovators, inventors, makers, and entrepreneurs living with spinal cord injury funds for social-impact, creative entrepreneurship projects.

The mission of the Cultural Grants Program is to play an active role in the development of Chicago’s arts and culture community by funding artists and arts organizations that have the potential to meaningfully contribute to the City’s cultural vitality. The Individual Artists Program aims to support this mission by assisting Chicago’s professional artists in creating work that elevates their careers and brings value to the City of Chicago. Through this program, DCASE will award project grants to resident Chicago artists over the age of 18 across numerous disciplines and through six funding categories. This is a highly competitive and prestigious program designed to support the applicants with the strongest merit and vision. We anticipate that approximately 35% of applications will be funded. Creative Capital invests in artists that shape the future. They were founded by the Andy Warhol Foundation after the NEA decided not to fund individual artists. Eliza So Fellowship
2-Month Writers Residency, $900 Stipend
Eligibility:You are either: a) A US immigrant (documented or undocumented), b) An indigenous writer with significant ties to Montana (either you are from Montana, live in Montana currently, or have another significant affiliation with the state).
This 2-month-long residency in Las Vegas will offer award recipients time and solitude to help them finish a book that is already in progress. Fellowships will include room and board at The Writer’s Block, along with a $500 food stipend and $400 toward travel.

Fender Music Foundation Grant

The Fender Music Foundation awards instruments and equipment to eligible music instruction programs. These items are lightly used, blemished or otherwise imperfect and have been collected from manufacturers and retailers. Descriptions regarding the specific imperfections of each instrument will be available to selected programs. The organization is currently awarding acoustic guitars, electric guitars, acoustic-electric guitars, bass guitars and the equipment necessary to play these instruments. However, other traditional music instruments are sometimes available. Traditional instruments include string instruments, woodwind instruments, brass instruments, percussion instruments, keyboards and voice. DJ equipment and computers are not available through The Fender Music Foundation.

Jane Farver Curatorial Residency at ISCP

The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) is pleased to announce an open call for a fully-funded three-month residency for a curator from the Global South, including a stipend for travel and housing, supported by the Jane Farver Memorial Fund. In order to be eligible, curators must currently be a full-time resident of and have an active curatorial practice in one of countries listed below. The residency program includes 24-hour access to a private furnished office space; meetings with Visiting Critics; field trips to museums, galleries and other cultural venues; and participation in a summer Open House and public talk. The residency also includes funding to curate and produce an exhibition in ISCP’s 350 sq. ft. Project Space during early 2019. Proposals for the exhibition can be for either solo or group exhibitions, in a range of media. The Japan U.S. Friendship Commission offers up to five leading contemporary and traditional artists from the United States an opportunity to spend three to five months in Japan in 2018-19 through the U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Program. Cultural understanding is at the heart of this program. Artists participate as seekers, as cultural visionaries, and as living liaisons to the traditional and contemporary cultural life of Japan. They also serve as connectors who share knowledge and bring back knowledge. The Family Residency provides an artist-parent with structured time to create, while their child(ren) participate in nature-focused arts programming under the guidance and expertise of professional theatre educators. All family residents (parents and children) enjoy three communal farm-fresh meals daily. The residency culminates short, informal of the work accomplished by both parents and children while in residence at SPACE. Significant others are invited to spend the final night and day of the residency on the farm. As of 2018, SPACEwelcomes artist-parents with children who are 3 to 12 years of age to apply. If the child is between the ages of 7 and 12, the child must also fill out the application. If you are a two-parent household and both parents want to participate in the residency, both parents must demonstrate in separate applications that they have a need for time and space to work on their craft.

The New Movement Residency at the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance aims to support choreographers by providing space for them to explore, create and prepare dance work for future touring and presentations. The Walt Whitman Award

For our purposes, "early career" is a flexible term that should be interpreted liberally to include artists who have finished their academic work within twelve years from the year that the prize is awarded. Age is not determinative, and artists who have not earned BFAs or MFAs are still eligible so long as they have not been working as an artist for more than twelve years.

Women's Jewelry Association: Cindy Edelstein Jewelry Design Scholarship

The Women’s Jewelry Association established the Cindy Edelstein Jewelry Design Scholarship in memory of one of the jewelry industry’s most beloved and respected members who died suddenly in 2016 of cardiac arrest. For that reason, the scholarship is targeted to emerging fine jewelry designers or artisans, and memorializes her tireless pursuit of educating, mentoring, and coaching these entrepreneurs.
